Seonghee Huh
In the Sarangbang (reception room in a house for male guests) of the Joseon Dynasty, scholars cherished and utilized the munbangsau (The four essential tools of the scholar's study—paper, brush, ink stick, and ink stone) alongside various tools for writing and painting. These items served as both the foundation for scholarship and art, as well as symbols of the owner's discernment and refinement. They were also cherished possessions of the scholars, often exchanged as meaningful gifts among like-minded friends. Together with books, calligraphy, and paintings, they created a sophisticated and elegant environment within the scholar's space.

The yeonjeok (water dropper) is a vessel used to hold water for grinding ink on an inkstone. Crafted to embody both beauty and significance, it often featured symbolic designs and shapes, making it one of the most artistic tools of the study. Familiar motifs from Korean culture—such as ducks, haetae (mythical lion-like creatures), toads, peaches, and dragons—are incorporated into the yeonjeok, offering the joy of interpreting their symbolism through ecological and literary lenses. This interplay of symbolism is one of the defining aesthetics of the yeonjeok.

Functionally, the yeonjeok is a scientific tool, operating on the principle that air must enter as water exits. This principle and its application are steeped in philosophical thought, representing the dual concept of "filling and emptying one's thoughts and emotions."

Seong Hee Huh’s works depict baekja (white porcelain) and baekja cheonghwa (blue and white porcelain) yeonjeok, navigating between realism and artistic interpretation. Through her art, she revisits and shares the intricate beauty of Korean culture embodied in the yeonjeok of the Joseon Dynasty, offering a contemporary reimagination of this cultural heritage.


조선시대 사랑방에는 글씨와 그림을 그리기 위해 선비들이 소중히 다루었던 문방사우(文房四友)와 여러 용구들이 있었다. 이러한 문방구들은 학문과 예술의 출발점인 동시에 주인의 안목과 격을 보여주는 선비들의 애장품이었으며, 뜻이 맞는 벗들이 주고받는 의미 있는 선물이기도 했다. 또한 책자, 서화 등과 함께 고급스러운 선비들의 공간을 이루었다.  

연적은 벼루에 먹을 갈 때 쓰는 물을 담아두는 그릇이다. 멋과 의미를 담기 위해 상징성을 내포하는 다양한 모양과 문양이 어우러져 그 자체로 예술적 가치를 지니는 문방구 중 하나이다. 오리, 해태, 두꺼비, 복숭아, 용 등 오랫동안 우리 문화에서 친숙하게 자리 잡았던 형상을 생태와 어문으로써 그 상징을 풀어가는 즐거움은 연적이 가진 미학 중 하나이다. 

물이 나오는 만큼 반드시 공기가 들어가야 하는 원리로 만들어진 연적은 과학적인 용구이다. 이런 연적의 원리와 사용법은 철학적인 사고로 이어져 '생각과 마음을 채우고 덜어내는 이중적인 의미'를 가진 대상물로 표현된다.

허승희 작가는 화면에 그려진 백자, 백자 청화의 연적들은 실제와 회화적 고증 사이를 넘나들며 조선시대 연적에 담긴 다양하고 정교한 우리 문화의 아름다움을 재조명하고 공유한다.
