옵스큐라는 오는 4월 30일부터 기획전 《정지, 본성 (Still, Being)》을 개최한다. 이번 전시는 ‘정물화’라는 장르를 통해 인간 삶과 본성에 대해 성찰할 수 있는 찰나를 포착하고자 기획되었으며, 김남표, 김세중, 이정웅, 이창남, 허승희 다섯 작가가 참여한다.
정물화는 영어로 ‘스틸 라이프(Still Life)’, 프랑스어로는 ‘나튀르 모르트(Nature Morte)’라 불린다. 겉보기에는 고귀하고 아름다운 대상을 기록한 듯 보이지만, 그 본질은 '정지된 생명', 다시 말해 ‘죽은 자연’에 있다. 특히 바니타스(Vanitas) 정물화 전통에서는 유한한 생명과 인간 존재의 허무에 대한 깊은 성찰을 유도하며, 이는 정물화라는 단어 자체에 내포된 상징적 메시지라 할 수 있다.
고대 로마 시인 루크레티우스(Lucretius)는 “모든 것은 죽음과 함께 썩고, 죽음은 사물의 본성이다(Omnia morte cadunt, mors ultima linea rerum)”라고 말한 바 있다. 옵스큐라는 이번 전시를 통해 참여 작가들에게 ‘고귀’, ‘헛됨’, ‘허영’, ‘사치’, ‘정지’, ‘죽음’, ‘생명’, ‘소유’, ‘욕망’, ‘본성’ 등의 개념을 제안하고, 이 개념들을 각자의 예술 언어로 풀어낸 정물 작품을 선보인다. 이를 통해 관람자는 우리가 추구하는 삶의 본성과 욕망의 근원을 되돌아볼 수 있는 기회를 갖게 된다.

Obscura is pleased to announce its upcoming exhibition, Still, Being, opening on April 30th. This exhibition is curated with the intention of capturing reflective moments on human life and nature through the genre of still-life painting. Participating artists include Nampyo Kim, Sejoong Kim, Jeongwoong Lee, Changnam Lee, and Seonghee Huh.
Still life, referred to as "Still Life" in English and "Nature Morte" in French, initially appears as a depiction of noble and beautiful subjects. Yet, its essential meaning lies deeper as "still life," or literally, "dead nature." Particularly within the tradition of Vanitas still-life painting, profound meditations on life's transience and the futility of human existence are evoked, representing symbolic messages inherently embedded in the genre itself.
The ancient Roman poet Lucretius once stated, "Omnia morte cadunt, mors ultima linea rerum" ("Everything falls in death; death is the final limit of things."). In this exhibition, Obscura proposes to the artists themes including nobility, vanity, futility, luxury, stillness, death, life, possession, desire, and nature. Each artist interprets these concepts through their unique artistic languages, offering visitors the opportunity to contemplate the essence of life and the roots of human desire.
Art critic Choe Jeong U describes still-life painting as "paradoxical art that encapsulates the dynamics of becoming within a static frame—a stage of 'ex-stasis' itself." This genre uniquely juxtaposes dualities: life and death, stillness and vitality. Such paradoxical qualities, simultaneously suggesting cessation and abundance, define the inherent artistic appeal and fundamental nature of still-life painting.
Through diverse perspectives and visual vocabularies, the works of these five artists transcend mere visual pleasure, prompting philosophical reflection on existence and nature. Still, Being will be on view from April 30th to May 24th at Obscura 3 (Yangjae). ◼️Obscura

김남표(b.1970)의 “Instant Landscape”는 가장 대표적인 시리즈로 뛰어난 회화적 표현력과 독창적인 판타지로 국-내외에서 많은 주목을 받아왔다. 최근 그는 실제 경험한 풍경을 기반으로 회화적 확장을 목표로 영화, VR, 해외 레지던시, 드로잉 등 다양한 프로젝트를 진행 중이다. 구멍(옵스큐라, 서울, 2024), Annapurna – 회화적 리얼리티(OKNP갤러리, 부산, 2024), 제주도를 그리다(교보아트스페이스, 서울, 2022), Instant Landscape – Goosebumps(가나아트센터, 서울, 2017), Instant Landscape(가나아트 뉴욕, 2009), Instant Landscape(갤러리 현대-윈도우 갤러리, 서울, 2007) 등 국·내외에서 25회 이상의 개인전과 80회 이상의 단체전에 참여하였다. 조각가 윤두진과의 아티스트 그룹, ‘텐트’로 활동하고 있다. 아부다비(아랍에미리드), 아트센트럴(홍콩), KIAF(서울) 등의 국제적 아트페어에서 작품을 소개하고 있으며 서울시립미술관, 국립현대미술관 미술은행, 성남문화재단, 수원아이파크미술관 등에 작품이 소장되어 있다. 서울대학교 미술대학 서양화과 학부(B.F.A)를 졸업하고 동대학원 석사(M.F.A)를 받았다.
김세중(b.1977)은 리얼리즘 회화를 기반으로 존재와 시간, 실재와 비실재의 경계에 대해 탐구해왔다. 정밀한 하이퍼리얼리즘 기법을 통해 돌, 조각상, 풍경 등을 화면에 소환하며, 감각 너머의 존재 본질과의 접촉을 시도한다. 《존재의 속삭임》(2024, 비움예술창작소), 《존재의 호흡》(2023, 비움예술창작소), 《콜링: 존재와 호흡》(2023, BHAK) 등 14회의 개인전을 열었으며, 180회 이상의 국내외 단체전 및 프로젝트, 아트페어에 참여하였다. 경기창작센터 레지던스, 박수근미술관 창작 스튜디오, 안산시 비움예술창작소 등의 레지던시에 참여하였다. 작품은 박수근미술관, 광주시립미술관, 국방부(전쟁기념관), 고려대학교 박물관 등 여러 기관에 소장되어 있다. 홍익대학교 회화과 학사를 졸업하고 동대학원 석사, 박사에서 학위를 받았다.
이정웅(b.1982)은 다층적인 상징물로 판타지 내러티브를 구성하여 사실적이면서 동시에 회화의 평면성을 드러내는 작업을 하고 있다. ‘X Mission X’과 ‘notwithstanding’ 개인전을 옵스큐라 함께 진행하였다. 인물과 자연 뿐만 아니라 정물에서도 독창적인 감성과 표현력의 결과물을 내고 있다. HK Art Fair(홍콩), Art Stage Singapore(싱가포르), London Art Fair(런던), 더 프리뷰(서울), 대구 아트페어(대구) 등 국내외의 다양한 아트 페어에서 작업을 선보이고 있다. 성균관대학교 미술대학 서양화과 학부(B.F.A)를 졸업하였다.
이창남(b.1964)은 일상적 사물과 인물, 풍경을 사실적으로 포착하며 시간의 층위와 기억의 잔영을 회화 안에 응축해온 작가다. 유화로 정교하게 재현된 사물은 단지 대상을 묘사하는 데 그치지 않고, 그 주변에 깃든 관계, 장소, 온도를 함께 드러낸다. 주요 개인전으로 《Still Life of Clan》(2023, 페이토 갤러리), 《Time and Object》(2017, 통인옥션갤러리), 《CHANG NAM LEE PAINTINGS & DRAWINGS》(2012, Cy Art Gallery) 등이 있다. 작품은 국립현대미술관 미술은행에 소장되어 있다. 서울대학교 미술대학 서양화과를 졸업하였다.
허승희(b.1984)는 한국의 문화재를 현대적으로 재해석하며 전통적 소재와 동양화 기법, 사실적 표현력을 결합한 작업을 지속해왔다. 주요 개인전으로는 청운(옵스큐라, 2024), 더프리뷰 아트페어(옵스큐라, 2023), 연적硯滴, 물들다(모리함전시관, 2022)가 있다. 2018년 외교부 주최 한국의 아름다움 공모전 수상과 2016년 국립생물자원관 주최 자생 동·식물 세밀화 공모전 우수상을 수상하였다. 기업은행과 신한카드 등에 작품이 소장되어 있다. 서울대학교 미술대학 동양화과와 고고미술학과를 졸업하고 미술대학 동양화과 석사 학위를 받았다.

Recently, Kim has been actively expanding his artistic approach by incorporating real-life landscapes into diverse projects, including film, virtual reality (VR), international residencies, and drawing. His work has been exhibited extensively in solo shows such as "Hole" (Obscura, Seoul, 2024), "Annapurna – Painterly Reality" (OKNP Gallery, Busan, 2024), "Drawing Jeju Island" (Kyobo Art Space, Seoul, 2022), "Instant Landscape – Goosebumps" (Gana Art Center, Seoul, 2017), "Instant Landscape" (Gana Art New York, 2009), and "Instant Landscape" (Gallery Hyundai - Window Gallery, Seoul, 2007), among more than 25 solo exhibitions and over 80 group shows worldwide. Employing precise hyperrealistic techniques, he brings stones, sculptures, and landscapes vividly to life, striving to engage with the essence of existence beyond sensory perception. Kim has held 14 solo exhibitions including "Whispers of Existence" (2024, Bium Art Space), "Breath of Existence" (2023, Bium Art Space), and "Calling: Existence and Breath" (2023, BHAK), and has participated in over 180 group exhibitions and art fairs worldwide. His residencies include the Gyeonggi Creation Center, Park Soo Keun Museum Art Studio, and Ansan Bium Art Space. His works are part of prestigious collections at Park Soo Keun Museum, Gwangju Museum of Art, the War Memorial of Korea, and Korea University Museum. Kim received his B.F.A., M.F.A., and Ph.D. in Painting from Hongik University.
Jeongwoong Lee (b.1982) creates fantasy narratives using multi-layered symbolic imagery, combining realism with an explicit acknowledgment of painting's inherent flatness. His solo exhibitions include "X Mission X" and "notwithstanding," both organized in collaboration with Obscura. Lee’s distinct emotional resonance and expressive abilities are evident across portraits, nature scenes, and still-life compositions. His works have been exhibited in numerous international art fairs such as HK Art Fair (Hong Kong), Art Stage Singapore, London Art Fair, The Preview (Seoul), and Daegu Art Fair. He graduated with a B.F.A. in Painting from Sungkyunkwan University.
Changnam Lee (b.1964) captures everyday objects, figures, and landscapes realistically, condensing layers of time and lingering memories within his paintings. His meticulous oil paintings reveal more than mere depictions of objects, instead capturing their underlying relationships, environments, and atmospheres. Notable solo exhibitions include "Still Life of Clan" (2023, Paito Gallery), "Time and Object" (2017, Tongin Auction Gallery), and "CHANG NAM LEE PAINTINGS & DRAWINGS" (2012, Cy Art Gallery). Lee’s work is included in the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Art Bank. He graduated from Seoul National University with a B.F.A. in Painting.
Seonghee Huh (b.1984) reinterprets Korean cultural heritage through a contemporary lens, merging traditional subjects with East Asian painting techniques and realistic representation. Major solo exhibitions include "Cheong un" (Obscura, 2024), "The Preview Art Fair" (Obscura, 2023), and "Water Dropper" (MoriHam Exhibition Hall, 2022). Huh has received awards from competitions such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ "Beauty of Korea" contest in 2018 and the National Institute of Biological Resources’ competition for detailed illustrations of native flora and fauna in 2016. Her works are held in collections by the Industrial Bank of Korea and Shinhan Card. She holds bachelor's degrees in Oriental Painting and Archaeology and Art History, as well as an M.F.A. from Seoul National University.

Huh has received awards from competitions such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ "Beauty of Korea" contest in 2018 and the National Institute of Biological Resources’ competition for detailed illustrations of native flora and fauna in 2016. Her works are held in collections by the Industrial Bank of Korea and Shinhan Card. She holds bachelor's degrees in Oriental Painting and Archaeology and Art History, as well as an M.F.A. from Seoul National University.
